Topics Addressed at Last Meeting on May 19: Topics Addressed at Last Meeting: The meeting was attended by Jan F-D, Jeff F., Kristin J., Kevin M., Amy W. and Doug H. John Dwyer was invited to speak on elements that he considers important in worship space: semi-circular layout (even 360o ), flexibility, movable altar, fixed pulpit, baptismal font, more space between altar and chairs (chancel) to create room for foot washing, baptisms, ordinations, etc., an Ambry (in a chapel?) and a columbarium in the ruins. John pointed out we are planning for the next generation(s). The group discussed the number of people we want to be able to seat. Based on becoming a program parish, we agreed with the number that came up in the growth discernment process: 350. We noted the minimum (to justify the expense of expansion or relocation) should be 250. Matt J. displayed a plan of the old (pre-fire) church and access and flow were discussed. St. Patrick’s in Georgetown was mentioned as a model on expandable space, where movable walls are used to divide or open the worship space, fellowship hall, and meeting space. The group reviewed in detail the first section of a list of worship space elements and specifications that was provided by Jeff F. We noted the need for a chapel or side altar, possibly screened off, confirmed the group endorsed the semi-circular, flexible chair layout, learned that we can handle communion more efficiently by increasing the number of chalices and ushers, decided not to focus on renting out our space in designing the worship space, and added stations of the cross as a possible wish list item. Jack Reiffer was also invited to provide input to the Worship Space subcommittee. He provided a document that addresses worship values regarding Word and Sacraments. Jack addressed a permanent location for the spoken word, and the fact that most parishes have two locations, we have one which is movable. The lectern and baptismal font need to remain in place to remind us of the baptismal covenant and the presence of the word. Jack also commented on music, ensembles and instruments, endorsed the semi-circular layout and recommended a flat floor to facilitate multi-purpose use, suggested the space be plain, bright, and light and commented on other issues. The committee discussed the need to do field trips to other parishes to view worship space. Members of the subcommittee and the parish are invited to participate in this process, identifying parishes to view, participating in a field trip, and writing up observations. Next Meeting:
Monday, June 9, 7:00-8:30, St. Thomas’ Upper Room Agenda: Tim Hagy is invited to attend our next meeting, at which we will discuss the role of music in our worship and the physical requirements of choir, instruments, invited musicians and more. At our last meeting we covered ¼ of the specifications included in Jeff F.’s list. We will continue to work our way through this list at our next meeting. Feedback Needed from Parishioners: Please speak with any member of the Worship Space subcommittee about your thoughts on worship space planning. We want to know your concerns and ideas. Everyone is invited to contribute, including participating in trips to local churches to get ideas. Feel free to recommend parishes to visit and volunteer to help out. Time is short; we need to complete this process this month. Have your say NOW! |
